12 Hour Spinathon
House Of Hiit, Knottingley
My name is Sarah, and I am the owner of House of HiiT gym in Knottingley. At the time of Matthew’s diagnosis, I was working with Dan (Matthew’s brother) in the gym and had become personally invested in his progress.
After Matthew’s passing, I wanted to see whether there was a way I could help keep Matthew’s memory alive in a positive and empowering environment, but also raise awareness around Bone Cancer.
Matthew’s battle really opened my eyes to the statistics around Bone Cancer as I knew nothing about it prior to Matthew’s experience, it really made me realise the huge lack of awareness around it, and the shortage of funding allocated for Bone Cancer research compared to other cancer charities.
The obvious approach was to use the gym as a means of raising awareness, and so we started working alongside the Bone Cancer Trust and Matthew’s family to see how we could spread the message.
In April 2022, over thirty gym members took part in a 12-hour Spinathon at House of HiiT, completing sponsorships and inviting families to come and support on the day, here we raised a total of £3475.78!
The Spinathon also included a bake sale, raffle, sweepstakes, tuck shops and Bone Cancer clothing stores which all contributed to the final count.
It has been a privilege to work alongside Matthew’s family and the Bone Cancer Trust and I will continue to share Matthew’s story in our gym, we currently have a photo of him on our notice board alongside a memory of the Spinathon and charity hall, so his story will always be a significant part of us!
